After You Fixed the Problem: How to Ask a Customer to Update Their Google Review

A negative review lands. You reach out. You fix the problem - refund, redo, genuine apology, whatever the situation called for. The customer is satisfied. You follow up with a professional public response on the listing.

The review stays.

This is the gap that most review management guides don't fill. There are templates for requesting initial reviews. There are guides for responding to negative ones. Almost nothing covers the moment after the resolution - when you'd like to ask the customer whether they'd consider updating what they wrote, but you're not sure how to phrase it without making things worse.

Most businesses do one of two things: they never ask (and live with the original review indefinitely), or they ask in a way that makes the customer feel pressured or manipulated. Both outcomes are avoidable. This post covers the two situations where an update request genuinely makes sense, what to say in each one, and the version of this message you should never send.

What the Rules Actually Allow (and Prohibit)

Google's review policies do not prohibit asking a customer to update a review. What they prohibit is offering or implying incentives in exchange for updating or removing one. Asking is allowed. Paying for an update - or offering a discount contingent on a rating change - is not.

Some business owners assume the ask itself is against policy and never make it. That assumption leaves reviews unchanged that could legitimately be revised by a customer who is now satisfied with how things were handled.

One boundary worth knowing clearly: the appropriate request is to update a review to reflect the customer's current experience, not to remove it entirely. Google's platform allows reviewers to edit what they wrote at any time. Framing your request around editing or updating tends to feel less coercive than framing it as removal - and it is more honest, since what you actually want is for the public record to reflect what is now true.

If a customer chooses to change a 1-star to a 4-star, or to add a note about how the issue was resolved, that is their choice to make. Your job is to create an opening for that choice without applying pressure to it.

Situation One: The Complaint You Genuinely Resolved

The only update request worth making is one where the customer's specific complaint has been genuinely addressed. Asking before the problem is resolved is not a review update request - it is damage control, and customers recognize the difference immediately.

What genuine resolution looks like in practice varies by situation. It might mean you refunded the charge they disputed. You sent a technician back and the repair held. You called to apologize and addressed whatever the specific issue was. The key signal is the customer's response in the resolution conversation - they indicated they were satisfied.

That last point matters more than most people realize. If you've resolved the issue internally but haven't heard from the customer that they're actually satisfied, don't assume. The resolution conversation is what creates the opening for an update request. Your internal determination that the problem is fixed does not.

Timing matters here too. The ask should come at the end of, or shortly after, the resolution conversation - not a week later when the positive feeling has faded. Not via the public reply thread on their Google review, which is visible to everyone and creates pressure rather than an invitation. A direct channel - text, email, or a follow-up call - used immediately after a positive resolution is the right moment.

The Script After a Resolved Complaint

Three scenarios, each with a different context.

After a phone call resolution

You resolved the issue on a call and the customer expressed satisfaction before hanging up. Send a brief text or email shortly after:

Hi [Name], thanks again for the call today. I'm glad we got that sorted. If you feel the resolution we reached is worth reflecting in your Google review, we'd genuinely appreciate the update - but no pressure either way. Here's your review page if it's useful: [link]

After an email or message thread

The resolution happened in writing. The customer's final message confirmed they were satisfied. Close the thread with:

Hi [Name], really glad we were able to work through this. If you'd like to update your Google review to reflect how things were resolved, that would mean a lot to us - here's the link to make it easy: [link]. Either way, thank you for giving us the chance to make it right.

When the customer brings it up themselves

Sometimes a satisfied customer will say "I'll go update that review" during the resolution conversation. Don't let that pass without reinforcing it gently and making the action easy:

That would be wonderful - thank you. Here's the direct link so you don't have to search for the page: [link]. Really appreciate you saying that.

All three versions share the same structure: a brief acknowledgment of the resolution, a low-pressure invitation, and a direct link. The "no pressure either way" and "either way, thank you" language is not filler - it is what makes the ask feel like an invitation rather than a demand.

Situation Two: When the Stars Don't Match the Text

A separate category of update-worthy review is the accidental or misaligned rating. A customer writes a genuinely positive paragraph about your service and leaves 3 stars instead of 5. Or they appear to have reviewed the wrong business entirely. Or the review text is enthusiastic but the star count doesn't line up with anything they described.

This happens more often than most business owners expect. Mobile review interfaces are small and easy to mis-tap, and not every customer notices the discrepancy between what they wrote and what they clicked.

The emotional context of this ask is completely different from the post-complaint version. There is no problem to have resolved. The customer is already happy. They made a technical error, and you are giving them the chance to correct it.

Be careful with the framing: some customers feel embarrassed when a mistake is pointed out, and a few will dig in rather than acknowledge it. The goal is to make the correction feel easy and non-judgmental - not to make the customer feel foolish for making an error in the first place.

The Script for an Accidental Rating

Hi [Name], thank you so much for the kind words in your Google review - it genuinely means a lot to the team. I noticed the star rating came through as [X stars], which might not have been what you intended given what you wrote. If it was a mis-tap and you'd like to update it, here's the direct link: [link]. If the rating was intentional, no worries at all - we appreciate the feedback either way.

The phrase "which might not have been what you intended" is doing most of the work here. It gives the customer a graceful exit if the rating actually was intentional - they can ignore your message without having to explain themselves. If it was a mistake, the path to fixing it is easy and non-embarrassing.

One note: only send this message when the discrepancy is genuinely obvious. A 4-star review with positive text is not a clear error - some customers rate 4 stars on purpose as a signal that nothing is perfect. Reserve this ask for cases where the text and the stars are clearly misaligned, or where the customer appears to have reviewed the wrong business entirely.

What the Ask Should Never Sound Like

The most damaging version of this request is the one that makes the customer feel their review is being managed rather than acknowledged. Several specific patterns produce this effect.

"Our reputation depends on reviews like this." Transferring your business anxiety onto the customer is not a request - it is pressure disguised as transparency. Customers did not write a negative review in order to hurt your business, and framing the ask in terms of your reputation puts them in an unfair position.

Mixing this ask with other problems. "We've been losing reviews to Google's filter lately, so any help really matters right now." The customer's decision about their review has nothing to do with your other review challenges. Combining these makes the ask feel desperate rather than genuine.

Sending a template with no reference to the specific resolution. If your update request reads like an automated blast with a review link attached, the customer will treat it like one. The ask only works when it is clearly connected to the specific conversation that already happened between you. A message that could have been sent to anyone is, from the customer's perspective, exactly that.

Asking publicly in your Google response. Your owner response to a review is read by every future customer who sees that listing. A line like "We've resolved this issue - please consider updating your review" reads as coercive to outside observers, and it puts the reviewer in a position where choosing not to update looks like continued dissatisfaction. Handle update requests privately, always.

Following up more than once. One ask, one brief follow-up if you hear nothing after a week, then stop. After two messages with no response, the customer has communicated their decision without having to say no explicitly. Respect that.

When They Don't Update, and Why That Result Is Fine

Customers have no obligation to update a review, even after a complete and genuine resolution. Some will forget. Some won't know how to edit a Google review. Some will feel the original review still accurately describes a part of their experience, even if things improved. All of these are legitimate outcomes, and none of them mean the customer is still unhappy.

What you already have is the public response you wrote when the review first appeared. That response - the one that acknowledged the issue, apologized, and offered to make things right - is visible to every person who reads that review from now on. A thoughtful owner response to a resolved complaint tells the story almost as well as an updated rating. Future customers reading a 1-star review followed by a professional response that clearly describes resolution tend to interpret the situation correctly: the business cares and handled it.

The more durable answer to negative reviews is not chasing updates on old ones. It is generating enough positive reviews from satisfied customers that individual negative entries become context rather than the dominant impression. A business with forty recent reviews in the four-to-five star range and two older negative reviews with professional responses reads very differently from a business with six total reviews where two of them are negative.
