This is not intuitive. Business owners naturally think about their brand's reputation as a single thing. Google does not share that mental model.

The practical consequence: every location must be managed as its own review ecosystem, with its own incoming velocity, its own response cadence, and its own collection process. A system that works at one location and is then applied loosely or not at all to the others will produce exactly the kind of divergence described above - a flagship that looks healthy and a satellite that looks abandoned.

The frustrating truth is that you cannot transfer reviews between profiles. Google has no mechanism for moving a review from one Business Profile to another. A review placed on the wrong location is staying there. You cannot flag it for removal simply because it belongs elsewhere - it is a legitimate, policy-compliant review from a real customer. It just describes the wrong business.

What you can do is respond to it in a way that clarifies the situation for anyone reading the profile - something like: "Thank you so much - it sounds like you may have visited our [street name] location, which is at [address]. We are glad the team took good care of you. We hope to see you again at whichever branch is most convenient." This does not fix the misattribution, but it acknowledges the situation for future readers and keeps the profile accurate in context.

Prevention is more effective than recovery. Make each location's profile visually and descriptively distinct from the others. Use location-specific cover photos (a photo of that building's exterior, not a generic brand image). Write location-specific business descriptions that mention the neighborhood or cross street. Keep hours accurate so customers can distinguish between profiles by schedule. The more clearly differentiated each profile is, the less likely Maps is to serve the wrong one to a customer trying to review you.

Why One Location Always Falls Behind on Review Velocity

In almost every multi-location business, there is one profile that consistently accumulates reviews at a healthy rate and one or more that plateau. The plateau is not random. It follows a predictable pattern with predictable causes.

The location that stays healthy is almost always the one where the owner or the most senior manager is physically present most of the time. That person has internalized review collection as part of closing out every interaction. It is a habit built through repetition at their specific location, in their specific flow. The staff at other locations did not watch that habit form and have not been given the same feedback loop that reinforces it.

The locations that plateau are almost always the ones where the review request process was set up once - maybe a QR code printed out, or a single email to the location manager asking them to "do what we do at the main location" - and then left to run on its own. Across three locations, you now have three different managers responding to reviews with three different approaches. Location A's manager writes warm, specific replies that mention the reviewer's name and the work that was done. Location B's manager copy-pastes a template. Location C's manager has not responded to a review in four months.

This inconsistency matters more than most business owners expect. Prospective customers in a multi-location market often compare profiles before choosing which branch to visit. When they see Location A's response quality alongside Location C's silence, they are not thinking "well, it is the same company." They are forming different impressions of the businesses they are actually considering visiting. The response pattern at each location contributes to that impression independently.

The solution is not a 30-page brand standards document. Managers at individual locations will not read it. What works in practice is a short, accessible reference that covers three things: a response time expectation (within 48 hours is a reasonable standard that is achievable without being burdensome), a list of what never to say publicly (do not disclose customer-specific details, do not argue factual points in the thread, do not offer compensation publicly), and one example of a well-written positive response and one example of a well-written negative response from your best-performing location.

That is genuinely all most managers need to close the gap between "not responding" and "responding in a way that reflects well on the business." The goal is not uniformity of voice. It is a floor below which no location should fall.

Using Your Best-Performing Location as a Benchmark for the Others

Multi-location businesses often reach for external benchmarks when trying to assess how their review profiles are doing. How many reviews does a business in our category typically have? What is the average rating in our market? What is a good monthly incoming rate?

These questions are less useful than they appear, because they obscure the most relevant comparison available to you: your own best-performing location. That location has already adapted to your specific service type, your customer demographic, your geographic market, and your staffing patterns. Its review profile represents what is achievable for your business - not the industry in the abstract, but this business at its best.

The practical exercise is to pull your strongest profile and extract four specific numbers: monthly incoming review rate (how many new reviews arrived each month over the past six months on average), response rate (what share of reviews received a response), recency of most recent review (days since the last review was posted), and the distribution pattern (is the incoming rate steady or bursty). These are the benchmarks. Compare every other location against them.

The comparison will almost always reveal the same pattern: one or two locations are within range of the benchmark on most metrics, and one is substantially behind on all of them. That is where to focus first. Trying to improve every location simultaneously spreads effort too thin and produces marginal gains everywhere rather than meaningful improvement anywhere.

Pick the location furthest behind. Identify the specific gap - is it incoming velocity, response rate, or routing failures? Address that one gap, consistently, for sixty days. Then move to the next location. This is slower than it sounds and faster than trying to overhaul everything at once.

What Stays the Same Across Locations

The fundamentals of good review management do not change when you have multiple locations. Each location still benefits from the same principles that work at any single-location business: ask every customer, send the request at a moment when the experience is still fresh, link directly to the review form, respond to what comes in, keep the incoming rate steady rather than bursty.
